Bob Hicks (1930-2026)
I just learned today that Bob Hicks, the longtime publisher of the magazine Messing About in Boats, passed away on April 23rd at the age of 96. By the time he ended production of the magazine in 2022 - it was always a one-man operation - he had published an astounding 760 editions over 40 years. I would occasionally send him some material on Mariners that he would include, especially articles on the Rendezvous.
He was also extremely instrumental in motocross racing in New England, and he was a co-founder of the New England Trail Rider Association. This picture is of him and one of his motorcycles.
Josh Colvin, publisher of the Small Craft Advisor magazine and now online substack, wrote a nice remembrance of him:
His light editorial touch meant he’d publish stories from just about any sailor or boatbuilder with something to share, and that openness was part of the magic. Each issue felt like a down-to-earth trove of small-boat life. Bob led with his editor’s column, and over the years featured a wide cast of contributors, including the legendary designer Phil Bolger. He was a friend to boaters everywhere, and a generous soul. When we launched Small Craft Advisor, working in a similar lane, he didn’t treat us as competition. Instead, he asked for a copy—and offered a kind and favorable mention in his opening column.
Fair winds and smooth seas, Mr. Hicks, and thank you for all the years of Messing About in Boats.
