The 2019 O’Day Mariner National Rendezvous has officially been scheduled for August 2-4, and we will once again be sailing to Mystic Seaport this year! I’m already getting excited about this, especially since we haven’t been there in three years and we’ll have floating dock space for twelve instead of ten. The goal is to fill up the docks with Mariners!
As in past years, we’ll be leaving from the Niantic River and making the four-hour journey on Friday morning. We’ll be staying there overnight for two nights, and then we’ll sail back on Sunday morning. It’s a great opportunity for Mariner owners to have fun, check out the incomparable Mystic Seaport and enjoy sailing together.
I chose Mystic Seaport as the destination primarily because we haven’t been there since 2016, and I wanted to continue the fantastic relationship between the Mariner Class Association and the Seaport. They allow us to use their floating docks, which they don’t let anyone else use; this special privilege has been extended to us since our big 2013 Rendezvous there when we celebrated 50 years since the building of the O’Day Mariner with a record 18 boats. The Seaport’s new dockmaster was actually working on the docks helping us tie up after we sailed through a big storm on Long Island Sound on our way to the Seaport, and he has a lot of respect for the Mariner Class. It also helps that we are a “no frills” kind of group, and we take care of ourselves and our surroundings, unlike some other visiting groups that expect special treatment and constant attention.
A lot more information will be coming in the next few months, and registration will open in May. In the meantime, keep checking back here for updates, and if you’re reading this, in the area, and own a Mariner, I sure hope you’ll consider sailing with us.
